Vethukuli (Traditional Postpartum Herbal Bath)
The Kerala bathing ritual with water boiled with medicinal leaves and barks.

Vethukuli is the specific Kerala ritual bath given to mothers during the traditional confinement period. A large vessel of water is boiled with a set mix of medicinal leaves and barks, allowed to cool to a comfortable warmth, and poured slowly over the body after the daily oil massage, from the shoulders down.
Our Ayurvedic Therapy Herbal Bath and Steam page covers general herbal bathing and gentle localised steam. Vethukuli is narrower and more traditional: no steam, a fixed sequence, and the bath treated as the completion of the day's massage rather than a separate session. Families who grew up with the ritual often ask for it by name.
The caregiver prepares the bathroom first — a non-slip mat, a low stool, towels warmed and the baby cared for by someone else — and assists with washing the hair, rinsing off the oil and drying quickly so the mother does not chill.
Water is never poured hot, herbs are kept off unhealed stitches, and the bath is postponed in fever or giddiness. The routine ends with the mother dressed warmly, resting, and sipping a cup of herbal tea.
