Rasnadi Thalam Therapy (Medicated Herbal Powder Fomentation)
A traditional herbal powder applied to the crown to protect against postpartum chill.

Rasnadi churnam is a classical Ayurvedic herbal powder built around rasna, a herb traditionally used for joint and muscle discomfort. In Kerala postpartum care it is applied in two ways: as thalam, a small pinch rubbed onto the crown of the head after the bath, and as a dry fomentation, where the warmed powder is tied in cloth and dabbed over stiff joints.
The purpose is practical. Mothers who bathe often during recovery, especially with oiled hair, are prone to a heavy head, sneezing and a chilled feeling; the powder is used to dry the scalp and keep that chill away. The joint fomentation suits aching wrists, knees and ankles that many mothers notice in the weeks after delivery.
This is distinct from our leaf and herbal-pouch kizhi sessions: no oil-soaked bundles and no full-body massage — it is a short, focused treatment that fits neatly after the daily bath.
It is not used on broken scalp skin or with known sensitivity to the ingredients. The session takes about twenty to thirty minutes and ends with the mother resting and a cup of warm herbal tea.
